ACCA Exam Checklist

Before the exam

The Examination Attendance Dockets are dispatched three weeks before the first exam. It includes a timetable with schedules of all the exams you have entered for, details of the desk designed for you in each paper, address of the examination centre, etc. Do check out your route well in advance to ensure you don’t get hassled by directions at the last moment. Keep rush hour traffic in mind and try to arrive at the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the exam is due to start. Remember to carry a photo ID and bring your exam attendance docket to the exam centre.

You must sit at the desk designated for you. The supervisor will come and collect the Examination Attendance Docket from you during the exam. If you have any other exam during the session, the docket will be returned to you. If it is your last exam, the supervisor will keep the docket for ACCA in the records. The docket also contains exam regulations and guidelines which you need to follow during the exams.
Your exam desk will contain a candidate answer booklet and an examination question paper. Remember to check that you have the right booklet and the correct version of the paper before the exam starts. In case of any queries, raise your hand, the invigilator will come to you.

Making points and presenting answers

The next of the ACCA exam tips is about writing the papers. The answers must be appropriate in form, length and depth. Try to keep the sentences short yet clear. Keep the instructions in mind while answering anything. Use bullet points in case a list or a brief description is required. In case an explanation is sought for, provide fuller answers. In case an analysis or evaluation is required, develop the points logically, relevantly and coherently. You can get additional marks for this, if required. The good thing is ACCA does not penalise candidates for poor grammar or style, especially in the Foundation level or the Fundamental Level. However, the points that a candidate tries to make should be clearly understood. Try not to number points within an answer unless specifically asked for. Additional numbering can be confusing. If you put a diagram, figure or table, make sure you put a full explanation for the same. This elaborate that you actually understand the model, theory or the concept.

Time Management

Sticking to time frames is vital in an examination. This will also ensure that you do not lose any marks by running out of time. Make sure you divide your time effectively between marks available.
Don’t waste time by working on something longer than required. Don’t try to prove how knowledgeable you are in an examination. Stick to the point.

Some common problems during examination and solutions

  • When you discover that there is an error in a calculation or in a financial statement, correct the initial error only. Don’t spend time correcting the follow through the steps.
  • Make as many points as there are marks available. Don’t write extra.
  • If you are unable to answer as per the requirement of one point, move on to the next requirement or question. You can leave blank pages in your answer sheet and come back to it later for completing.

To conclude, we may mention that the pass rates for the ACCA examinations depends on the performance of marginal candidates. If the marginal candidates gain an extra mark or two, then not only will they clear the exam, the global pass rates would go higher.
