Writing CA both groups vs single group : Understanding the Pros and Cons!

Chartered Accountancy Course is one of the most reputed professional courses in India. The different stages of examination are conducted twice a year. It is done to give ample opportunities to the candidates to sit for the exam. The exam is conducted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India , or ICAI. The final examination is conducted in two CA group level: CA group 1 and CA group 2.

Most of the CA aspirants face this quandary of attempting both the CA groups or one CA group at once! This article attempts to sort this confusion.

The Approach: One CA Group at a Time

In CA exam, your approach towards the preparation matters a lot. Undoubtedly everyone aims at clearing both the groups at once and get sorted with the exams. It often happens towards the end that students start doubting their capability and decides to write one CA group instead of both the groups. Given the grim pass percentage and the difficulty level, this choice seems to be apt. This allows you to have a concentrated effort towards one group and hence the chances to clear are high. However, attempting one CA group instead of both has the following Cons:

  • You are eligible to contend for CA rank only when you sit for both the groups at once. So, even if you score really high marks in both groups individually, you do not stand a chance of securing a rank
  • You risk the attempt. If you are unable to pass the CA group you are attempting, you lose this attempt and most probably the next attempt as well (if you plan to sit for one group again)

The Approach: Both the CA Groups Together

If you plan to attempt both the CA group 1 and CA group 2 together, you stand to gain a lot in the sense of having an insurance of the attempt. In case, one of the groups is ruined, you always have the chance of managing the other group. Added to it, you are also eligible to contend for a rank, in case you are attempting both the groups together.  Nevertheless, following are the cons of attempting both the CA groups instead of one:

  • The CA pass percentage is very poor. This makes it a very difficult exam. When you are preparing for both the groups, you are dividing your effort which might not bore fruits
  • If you are unable to achieve enough marks in Group 1, you may end up having nothing. Or approximately 40 in all 7 subjects will not be enough, leading to failure in both groups

It is thus advisable to take an informed decision as to what are your aims and how you want to go forward to achieve it.
