  1. 4th Nuclear Security Summit begins in Washington
  • The summit will highlight achievements and commitments of several countries towards safeguarding nuclear devices and technologies and reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism
  • India is being represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the two-day summit. The fourth summit is the last summit under the current format and also under the presidency of Barack Obama
  • This edition of summit is expected to take stock of the measures being taken by all countries to safeguard nuclear materials and facilities and also prevent non-state actors gaining access to them

2.Vietnam’s National Assembly elects first female speaker

  • Vietnam’s National Assembly (NA) elected Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan as the country’s first female house speaker
  • Prior to this, Ngan served as Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly from July 2011

3.India becomes fourth largest spender on defence

  • India has become the world’s fourth largest spender on defence, following a 13.1% increase in its 2016-17 defence budget, according to US research firm IHS Inc
  • India’s rise in the rankings from sixth position last year is a result of an increase in expenditure to $50.7 billion, combined with cuts to military spending by Russia and Saudi Arabia, where low oil prices have put considerable strain on their finances
  • The Indian defence budget is expected to reach $64.8 billion by 2020 with procurement expenditure expected to grow faster than overall spending, according to IHS

4.Rajiv Gauba takes over as Secretary of Urban Development Ministry

  • Rajiv Gauba took over as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Urban Development
  • Gauba also served in the International Monetary Fund representing the Country for four years on the Board of IMF. He was Collector and District Magistrate for 7 years in the districts of Gaya, Nalanda and Muzaffarpur

5.Renowned Iraqi-British Architect Zaha Hadid passes away

  • Renowned Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid passed away due to heart attack. She was 65
  • She was world’s most famous female architect and was known for her neo futuristic design which was her signature architectural style
  • She was the first female winner of the top Pritzker Architecture Prize (2004), also known as the Nobel for architecture

6.Haryana Government fixes education qualification for Urban Bodies’ polls

  • Haryana Assembly passed two bills mandating minimum education qualification for contesting polls of urban local bodies of the state
  • The minimum educational qualification for a general male candidate will be Class X, while that for women and those belonging to SC category would be Class VIII
  • Haryana had earlier fixed similar qualification for gram panchayat elections as well

7.Telangana government launches M Wallet mobile App

  • Telangana State Transport Authority’s brand-new mobile app named M-Wallet, was launched by IT minister KT Rama Rao and transport minister P.Mahender Reddy, which is first of its kind in India
  • It will help motorists to avoid physically carrying documents like driving licence, registration certification and other vehicle related documents, since digital certificates can be uploaded through the App

8.ICCR to set up first Indian Chair in Arab world at Cairo

  • An MoU in this regard was signed between India’s Ambassador to Egypt Sanjay Bhattacharyya on behalf of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and and Prof. Abdel Wahab Ezzat, Acting President of ASU
  • ICCR is to foster and strengthen cultural relations and mutual understanding between India and other countries; to promote cultural exchanges with other countries and people; and to develop relations with nations

9.FICII and AIBC sign MoU to strengthen business ties

  • To further strengthen and promote business ties with Australia, FICCI announced inking an MoU with Australia India Business Council (AIBC)
  • The MoU also solidifies the partnership for the upcoming “Engaging with India” conference being held on 16 and 17 May, for which AFR is also a partner, AIBC said

10.Ministries signed an MoU to promote research under IMPRINT programme

  • 25 ministries of the Government of India signed an MoU under the IMPRINT programme of Union Government to promote research in premier technical institutions
  • The MoU signed included the Union Ministry of HRD, Union Ministry of Finance, Union Ministry of Rural development, Union Ministry of Power, Coal, New and Renewable energy, Union ministry of communication and IT

11.ISRO Sign An MoU With AAI to provide technicalities in construction of airports

  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the department of space sign an MoU with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to provide scientific parameters for construction of airports. DoS will provide data on the landscape around the airports
  • The Department of Science (DoS) has already signed an MoU with Ministry of Urban Development where the space technology will be used in projects like smart cities and housing

12.Nifty Launches MidSmallcap 400

  • The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has launched a new index Nifty Mid Small cap 400 for Mid And Small Cap Stocks
  • The new index will comprise of 400 companies which are the constituents of Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Small Cap 250 indices
  • Initially IISL will publish value of the Nifty Mid Small cap 400 at end of the day and subsequently disseminate online along with existing indices

13.Ranveer Singh to be Feted as ‘Maharashtrian of The Year’

  • Bollywood star Ranveer Singh, who brought alive the role of Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao II on the silver screen through Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Bajirao Mastani”, will on Friday be feted with the ‘Maharashtrian Of The Year’

14.BHAVINI appoints Kallol Roy as its new CMD.

  • Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI) has appointed the Kallol Roy as its new chairman and managing director (CMD)
  • BHAVINI is a wholly owned by the Union Government and is responsible for the construction, commissioning and operation of all Stage II fast breeder reactors envisaged as part of the country’s three stage nuclear power programme. BHAVINI is administered by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
  • Currently, BHAVINI is building 500 Mw prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam near Chennai

15.P. Chidambaram is the author of the book “Standing Guard— A year in Opposition”?

  • Palaniappan Chidambaram (born 16 September 1945) is an Indian politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress and a former Union Minister of Finance of India
  • He launched his book “Standing Guard – A Year in Opposition” a compilation of his Sunday columns published in the Indian Express in 2015

16.The World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 2nd April

  • The World Autism Awareness Day is observed every year on April 2 to raise awareness of spectrum disorder
  • The 2016 theme is “Autism and the 2030 Agenda: Inclusion and Neuro diversity”

17.India has been ranked 6th among the world’s 10 largest manufacturing countries

  • According to the recently released United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) report titled “YearBook”, India has been ranked 6th among the world’s 10 largest manufacturing countries
  • China has topped the list of 10-top industrial producers followed by the US, Japan, Germany and Korea

18.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conferred with the Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian honour “the King Abdulaziz Sash”

  • Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, has recently bestowed with the Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian honour “the King Abdulaziz Sash” by King Salman bin Abdulaziz at the Royal Court

19.World’s first ‘White Tiger Safari’ has opened in Madhya Pradesh

  • The world’s first ‘White Tiger Safari’ has recently opened for public at Mukundpur in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh
  • The first of its kind safari has cost Rs.50 crore and is spread over an area of 25 hectares
  • It is home to three white tigers including one male, two females and two Royal Bengal tigers

20.Novak Djokovic has won the 2016 Miami Open Men’s singles title

  • Novak Djokovic (Serbia) has won the 2016 Miami Open Title in the men’s singles category by defeating Kei Nishikori (Japan) by 6-3, 6-3 at Miami, Florida
  • On the other hand, in the women’s singles category, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus has won the title by defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova (Russia) by 6–3, 6–2 score

21.Nico Rosberg has won the 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix

  • Nico Rosberg, a German racing driver for Mercedes Formula One team, has won the 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Bahrain

22.Cyprian Kotut has won the 2016 Paris marathon in the men’s category

  • Cyprian Kotut, Kenyan long-distance runner, has won the 40th edition of the 2016 Paris marathon in the men’s category in Paris
  • With this, he became the 12th Kenyan to win the race and put his case straight ahead of the national marathon team selection for 2016 Rio Olympic Games

23.Antyodaya Express is the newly introduced fully unreserved, superfast train in India

  • Antyodaya Express, a long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train service, for the common man to be operated on dense routes
  • Two to four Deen Dayalu coaches will be added in some long distance trains for unreserved travel to enhance the carrying capacity
  • These coaches will also have facility for potable  water and a higher number of mobile charging points

24.Union Government imposes safeguard duty on import of steel products

  • The Union Finance Minister has extended the safeguard duty on import of some steel products by two years i.e till March 2018
  • The safeguard duty is tariff barrier imposed by government on the commodities to ensure that imports in excessive quantities do not harm the domestic industry.
  • It is mainly temporary measure undertaken by government in defence of the domestic industry which is harmed or has potential threat getting hared due to sudden cheap surge in imports

25.Renowned journalist Babu Bharadwaj passes away

  • Veteran journalist and writer Babu Bharadwaj passed away due to cardiac arrest in Kozhikode, Kerala
  • His famous works include Pravasiyude Kurippukal, Shavaghoshayathra, Pravasiyude Vazhiyambalangal, Puppet Theatre (short story collection) and Adrushya Nagarangal
  • He had won Kerala Sahitya Akademi award (2006) for his novel Kalapangalkkoru Grihapadam

26.Germany’s Development Bank KfW will provide loan assistance to metro system for Nagpur

  • Germany’s Development Bank KfW will provide loan assistance of 3750 crore rupees for the modern and sustainable metro system for Nagpur city
  • The loan period is 20 years with a moratorium of 5 years and disbursal will be based on the progress of the project over three years

27.Shiva Thapa has won the Silver medal at Asian/Oceania Qualifying event in China

  • Ace Indian boxer Shiva Thapa has won the silver medal at the Asian/Oceania Qualifying Tournament held in Qian’an, China in the 56 Kilogram category final
  • By entering in the final match of this event, he had booked his ticket to 2015 Rio de Janeiro Olympics Games after beating Kazakhstan’s Kairat Yeraliyev in the semifinals

28.”Vidyut Pravah” App has been Launched By Piyush Goyal

  • The mobile application ‘Vidyut Pravah’ has been launched by Mr. Piyush Goyal, the minister of state (Independent Charge) for Power, coal, new and renewable energy, to empower Common People to Demand 24×7 Power from the States
  • The Web application can be accessed through vidyutpravah.in. and the mobile version will be freely available for download from the Playstore for both Android and iPhones

29.Green Delhi Initiative Phase 1 Has Launched By Delhi C.M Arvind Kejriwal

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched the first phase of the Green Delhi initiative by planting trees at the Triangular Park near ITO Chowk
  • The initiative was launched in reference to action plan submitted by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to the Supreme Court after it demanded information on steps being taken to improve air quality and reduce air pollution in the Capital

30.IIT Madras and IIM Bangalore has topped the list of best Indian universities

  • IIT Madras and IIM Bangalore have topped the list of top educational institutes unveiled by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development
  • The HRD ministry released first-of-its-kind National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), IIT Madras is the top engineering college followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur
  • IIM Bangalore is the top management college followed by IIM Ahmedabad at rank no. 2 and IIM Calcutta at rank no. 3.The Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is the best university in India

31.World’s largest oil firm Aramco will invest in India

  • Blackstone Group has announced that it is buying Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.’s majority stake in Indian outsourcing firm Mphasis Ltd
  • This deal represents the largest acquisition by Blackstone in India
  • Blackstone will pay a purchase price of Rs 430 per share to HPE

33.Vedanta sets Guinness World Record for mass plantation

  • Mining conglomerate Vedanta said its subsidiary Talwandi Sabo Power (TSPL) has set the Guinness World Record for planting 2,08,751 saplings at a single location in less than an hour
  • Guinness World Records acknowledged this achievement by TSPL on December 17, 2015, by presenting a certificate
  • The mass plantation drive was organised in Mansa (Punjab) on October 30, 2015

34.Renowned Actor Larry Drake Has Passed Away

  • The famous American actor, voice artist and comedian Mr. Larry Drake has passed away due to cancer
  • The actor was best known for his role Benny Stulwicz in L.A. Law and the voice of Pops in Johnny Bravo
  • The actor has won Prime time Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

36.National Maritime Day is observed on 5th April

  • 5th April is marked as the National Maritime Day of India to commemorate the sailing of India’s first steamship Loyalty on April 5th 1919 from Mumbai to London
  • India has about 7516 kilometres of coastline serviced by a total of 182 ports, 12 of them under a special status as Major Ports being under the purview of the Central Government
  • 70 other ports termed as minor ones come under the jurisdiction of the respective State Governments. Ennore in Tamil Nadu has been declared as the 12th Major Port

37.First Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2016-17

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cuts the Repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.5% in its first bi-monthly monetary policy review for the 2016-17 fiscal and kept the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) unchanged
  • Repo Rate is the rate at which banks borrow from the central bank. One basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point

38.India’s Fastest Train “Gatiman Express” Flagged Off From Delhi To Agra

  • Gatiman Express, India’s fastest train is flagged off from Delhi to Agra
  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the much-awaited Gatiman Express for Agra from Nizamuddin Railway station
  • The Nizamuddin-Agra Gatiman Express is the first semi-high speed service in railways and will run at a speed of 160 km per hour, covering the 188 kilometer distance in 100 minutes

  • He succeeds Truong Tan Sang and shall have term of five years
  • He was elected as President after he had secured 91.5% votes that is 452 valid votes out of the total 494 members of the unicameral house

41.World’s first public dengue vaccination programme launched in Philippines

  • The world’s first public dengue vaccination programme was launched in the Philippines as nurses began injecting the first batch of a million children with a French drug to combat the sometimes deadly disease
  • Dengvaxia, developed by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur, obtained its first license in Mexico in December 2015 for use in individuals aged 9 to 45

  • 5 times world chess champion Viswanathan Anand will be honoured with the Hridaynath Award, which felicitates and recognises successful individuals across the country from various walks of life

  • The DCB Bank has launched India’s first Aadhaar-based ATM usage facility to make transactions easier with ATM for customers
  • The ATM will accept Aadhaar number and Aadhaar fingerprint (biometric) instead of ATM/ Debit Card and PIN to dispense cash from the bank account

47.Myneni Hari Prasad Rao, who died recently, was as an architect of Madras Atomic Power Station

  • Dr. Myneni Hari Prasad Rao (88), was considered as the architect of the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) and it’s first project director, was passed away recently in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
  • During his career, he received many awards such as Padma Shri (1984), Sanjay Gandhi Award for contribution in Science and Technology (1983), etc

48.Madhukar Gupta committee has been set up to suggest ways to tighten security along Indo-Pak border

  • The Government of India (GoI) has recently constituted a high-level committee to suggest ways to fortify the security along the border with Pakistan and address the issue of gaps and vulnerability in border fencing
  • The mandate of the committee is to study all types of gaps in fencing and all other vulnerabilities in the International Border on Indo-Pakistan Border
  • It will suggest comprehensive approach to fix the gaps in fencing and other vulnerabilities on interim and permanent basis

  • The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is observed every year on April 6 to recognize the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide
  • On IDSDP 2016, the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) has launched “Let’s play for Sustainable Development Goals” campaign to build awareness about the newly adopted UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs, focusing on how sport can contribute to their advancement

  • The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Pratap Rudy has recently launched “Transnational Skill Standards” in India to support international mobility of Indian workforce and also prepare them to work in international companies having their operations in India
  • These standards in skill development are benchmarked to the skill standards in United Kingdom across 82 identified job roles

53.Complete Ban On Alcohol in Bihar has been imposed by State CM

  • The Chief Minister of Bihar Mr. Nitish Kumar has declared total ban on the sale of all forms of alcohol with immediate effect
  • CM also said that while the alcohol licences of hotels, clubs and bars would be revoked, this ban would not affect army cantonments, as they are allowed to regulate the consumption and sale of liquor independently

54.Memorial for Abdul Kalam to be opened at Dilli Haat

  • Delhi government has passed a proposal to build a memorial for late President APJ Abdul Kalam at Dilli Haat, south Delhi
  • This memorial will include the notes, books, clothes and other personal items of the former president, will be opened to the public on July 27  Kalam’s death anniversary

55.Manish Sharma is the first Indian to be Executive Officer of Panasonic Corporation

  • Japanese electronics giant Panasonic has appointed senior executive Manish Sharma to its global executive council, inducting an Indian onto the coveted decision-making body of the $80-billion company for the first time ever
  • Sharma is the first Indian and fourth non-Japanese member of the 50-member Council headed by a global president

  • 7th April is celebrated each year globally as World Health Day under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO)
  • The day aims to draw attention to important health issues facing the world each year

57.East Coast Railways has become the largest freight loading railway zone

  • East Coast Railway (ECoR) has emerged as the largest freight loading railway zone of Indian Railways in 2015-16
  • ECoR loaded 173.49 million tonnes of freight compared to 161.91 million tonnes achieved in the corresponding period previous year and registered an increase of 7.1 per cent

58.Smriti Irani unveils bronze bust of Aryabhatta at UNESCO HQ

  • A bronze bust of ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer Aryabhatta has been unveiled at the UNESCO Headquarters
  • The bust, sculpted by renowned Indian sculptor Ram Sutar, was unveiled by HRD Minister Smriti Irani

59.Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel has launches ‘Maa Annapurna Yojana’

  • Gujarat chief Minister Anandiben Patel officially launched the state-wide implementation of National Food Security Act, which has been renamed as Maa Annapurna Yojana (Scheme) by the state government
  • Under the Maa Annapurna Yojna, 3.82 crore people of Gujarat will be benefited. Each of them will get rice at Rs 3 per Kg and wheat at Rs 2 per Kg

60.CP Gurnani has been appointed as Nasscom chairman

  • CP Gurnani, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tech Mahindra, is the new Chairman of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) for 2016-17 with effect from Wednesday
  • He would focus on programmes aimed at making India a digital and innovation hub.
  • He identified start-ups, cyber security and analytics as emerging areas for the Indian IT industry

61.S Balaji Arunkumar is the new deputy chairman of kolkata Port Trust

  • S Balaji Arunkumar, An IRTS officer of 1997 batch, has taken over as deputy chairman of Kolkata Dock System under Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) with effect from April 4
  • He was senior general manager of Container Corporation of India, Chennai, before assuming his new charge

62.Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson has been named as the new PM of Iceland

  • Iceland ruling coalition Government has named Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson (53) as the new Prime Minister after Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson had stepped down
  • Prior to this, he was Agriculture and Fisheries Minister (since 2013) and deputy leader of the Progressive Party of the Ireland

63.India Men have won the Asian Nations Cup Chess tournament

  • Indian men have won the 2016 Asian Nations Cup Chess tournament by defeating Vietnam in the final round by 3-1 score played in Abu Dhabi
  • In the final round match, Indian Grandmasters S P Sethuraman and K Sasikiran won on the 2nd and 4th boards while, B Adhiban and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi drew their respective matches on top and 3rd boards

  • TNCA is the governing body of Cricket activities in the Tamil Nadu state of India and the Tamil Nadu cricket team

  • Indigenously developed surface-to-air supersonic Akash missile System was successfully test fired from complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipuri in Odisha
  • Akash is a mid-range surface-to-air missile (SAM). The missile has supersonic speeds ranging from Mach 2.8 to 3.5. It has capability to carry warhead of 60 kg
  • It can engage aerial targets up to a range of approximately 25 kms. It can reach a high altitude of 18 kms and as low as 30 meters

57.Sushila Karki has become the first female Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court

  • The Constitutional Council of Nepal has selected Justice Sushila Karki (63) for the post of Chief Justice (CJ) of the Supreme Court of the country
  • However, her nomination is expected to be confirmed by a Parliamentary Hearings Committee which endorses the recommendation
  • She will succeed Kalyan Shrestha who retired from the top post. She shall have tenure of 1 year and retire in June 2017 upon reaching the age limit

  • Ahead of the second phase of odd-even car-rationing scheme set to begin from April 15, Delhi government launched PoochhO Carpool’ app to help people explore carpooling options during the 15-day exercise
  • After download, users will have to register themselves to find carpooling options within a radius of 1-5 km
  • For instance, someone who has an even-numbered car and wants to carpool on an odd date can look for odd-numbered cars on the app. The person will immediately get a list of odd-numbered cars in the vicinity

37.Government to sell its 11.36% stake in NHPC
