1. Exercise RIMPAC 2016” the multilateral naval exercise has started in United States

  • The 25th edition of Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016 has started in Pacific Ocean at Hawaii, United States from June 30, 2016 and will continue till August 4, 2016
  • In it, 27 countries viz. India, the Philippines, Australia, France, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Tonga, the United Kingdom, etc, are participating
  • The RIMPAC is the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise, which provides a platform for multilateral operational interactions aimed at increased interoperability and development of common understanding of procedures for maritime security operations

2. Rodrigo Duterte sworn-in as the new President of Philippines

  • Rodrigo Duterte, Maverick anti-crime candidate, has been sworn-in as the 16th President of the Philippines, after a landslide election victory in May 2016
  • He succeeded Benigno S. Aquino III and will have a tenure of 6 years

3. $ 201.50 million approved by World Bank (WB) for technical education quality improvement project in India

  • The World Bank Board has approved the $ 201.50 million for Technical Education Quality Improvement Project (TEQIP III) in India
  • The purpose of the project is to increase quality and equity in participating engineering education institutes and to improve the efficiency of the engineering education system in focus states
  • The maturity period for the project is 25 years with an additional 5 years grace period

4. India’s rank 35th in the World Bank’s 2016 Logistics Performance Index (LPI)

  • India has been ranked 35th out of 160 countries in the World Bank’s 2016 Logistics Performance Index (LPI)
  • India’s logistics performance at its key international gateways has improved in the last two years from 54 in 2014 to 35 in 2016, which will not only boost programmes, such as Make in India, but also help in increasing trade
  • The list is topped by Germany, followed by Luxembourg and Sweden

  • The UNMOGIP observes and reports on ceasefire violations along and across the Line of Control (LoC) and the working boundary between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors, India and Pakistan, in Jammu and Kashmir and also reports developments that could lead to ceasefire violations

8. Kerala state government has recently banned e-cigarettes

  • The Kerala Government has banned the manufacture, sale, marketing and advertising of e-cigarettes (or electronic cigarette) in the state, as its use could lead to cancer and heart diseases
  • With this, Kerala has become the 4th state in India to ban e-cigarette after Punjab, Maharashtra and Karnataka
  • E-cigarettes are handy devices that emit doses of vaporized nicotine
  • Nicotine is lethal, addictive and extremely harmful to children if they inhale or ingest it accidentally

9. India’s first integrated Defense Communication Network (DCN) has been launched in New Delhi

  • India’s first integrated Defense Communication Network (DCN) has been launched by Union Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar in New Delhi
  • The network will facilitate Indian Army, Indian Airforce, Indian Navy and the Special Forces Command to share situational awareness for a faster decision-making process
  • The DCN is a strategic, exclusive, secure and state-of-the-art communication network and has a pan-India reach from Ladakh to the North East to island territories
  • It is built by HCL under a nearly Rs. 600 crore project and is capable of working on terrestrial as well as satellite mode of communication and has also been fixed onboard different military vehicles

10. The Rapid Rural Police Response System (RRPRS) has recently launched in Punjab

  • The Rapid Rural Police Response System (RRPRS) has been launched by Punjab police to ensure prompt and effective police response in villages to counter any crime or law and order situation in just 20 minutes
  • Under this response system, any resident from rural area would only have to make a call on police helpline “100” for any kind of assistance from the police force
  • The new system would be available for 24×7 hours to respond to all kinds of emergencies or ‘call-for-help’ from the citizens of the State

  • Lewis Hamilton, a British Formula One racing driver from England, has won the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix title of Formula One
  • It is his third title of the 2016 season after Monaco Grand Prix and Canadian Grand Prix

13. Elie Wiesel, who passed away recently, had won the Nobel prize in Peace

  • Elie Wiesel (87), the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, has recently passed away in Manhattan, United States
  • He was best known for his major role in promoting Holocaust education and for perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust in the post-World War II era with his book “Night”, which was based on his experience as a prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps

14. Indian personality has been conferred with the 2016 Bharat Gaurav award

  • Neerja Bhanot, the senior flight purser on a Pan Am flight, has been conferred with the 2016 Bharat Gaurav Award in London, United Kingdom (UK) for her distinguished services to the nation and outstanding individual achievements
  • Neerja (22) gave up her life to save passengers during a terrorist hijack of a Pan-Am flight at Karachi international airport in Pakistan on September 5, 1986
  • The award was instituted by Sanskriti Yuva Sanstha, a Jaipur-headquartered NGO. Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot, brothers of Neerja, received the award at the Westminster Parliament building in London

15. “Mingle”, a social media banking platform for Facebook and Twitter users has been launched by SBI

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) has recently launched a social media banking platform for Facebook and Twitter users “SBI Mingle”, which will allow its customers to access various banking services via these social platforms
  • The customers have to register for this service through a simple one time registration process using either their account number or their ATM/Debit Card details
  • Currently, balance enquiry, mini statement, funds transfer within SBI as well as inter-bank and beneficiary management services are available for Facebook
  • On Twitter, using hashtags the customers can find out their account balance and view mini statements

16. The State Bank of India(SBI) has tied-up with Flipkart e-commerce firm to offer pre-approved EMI facility to shop online

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) has recently tied up with e-commerce giant Flipkart to offer new pre-approved Equated Monthly Installment(EMI) facility for SBI account holders
  • Under the tie-up, SBI will provide overdraft facility to its customers purchasing goods worth Rs. 5,000 and above on Flipkart for a tenor of 6, 9, and 12 months without any processing fees
  • The customer will be charged an interest for the purchase, which will be as per the bank’s personal loan policy
  • Personal loan interest (14%) will apply for the purchase

17. ‘MySpeed’ mobile app has been launched by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to measure mobile internet speed

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently launched ‘MySpeed’ mobile app, which allow users to measure their internet speed on their smart phone and send results to a TRAI analytics portal
  • The application will also send coverage, data speed and network information along with device and location of the customer

  • Earlier, he was in-charge of the Department of Banking Regulation
  • He also served as the Regional Director of Ahmedabad office of the RBI

  • Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has become the first Indian footballer to play in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Europa League
  • He achieved this feat when he plays for the Norwegian club Stabaek FC as the goalie against Connah’s Quay FC in a qualifying match in Rhyl, Wales
  • Previously, he made history by becoming the first Indian player to appear in a top-division European league game for Stabaek in Norwegian Tippeligaen, which is the Norway’s national league, in May 2016
  • The Europa League is a prestigious European club competition, only one rung below the Champions League

21. 5 % interest subsidy for farmers has been approved by Government of India (GoI) for FY17

  • The Government of India (GoI) will provide interest subvention of 5 % for all farmers for short term crop loans up to Rs 3 lakh for FY 17 (2016-17), provided they repay in time, or else a higher rate of 7% will be charged
  • The Interest subvention scheme is for public and private sector banks, cooperative banks, regional rural banks and NABARD for providing short term crop loan to farmers. Earlier, the subvention scheme was implemented by the Finance Ministry. It was transferred to the Agriculture Ministry in 2016

  • It is directly affiliated to the World Association (WOA) under the International Olympic Committee

  • The prize was established in 1951 by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), with a generous grant from Mr Biju Patnaik, the founder-president of the Kalinga Foundation Trust
  • The biennial award is jointly financed by the Government of India through the Ministry of Science and Technology, Odisha government and Kalinga Foundation Trust

  • The crew members of the first squadron of Tejas, a multi-role supersonic single-engine aircraft designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)

34. China fits final piece on world’s largest radio telescope

  • China has hoisted the final piece into position on what will be the world’s largest radio telescope, which it will use to explore space and help in the hunt for extraterrestrial life
  • The Five Hundred Metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, or Fast, is the size of 30 football fields and has been cut out of a mountain in the south-western province of Guizhou
  • The telescope, which has taken about five years to build, is expected to begin operations in September
  • Advancing China’s space programme is a priority for Beijing, with President Xi Jinping calling for the country to establish itself as a space power

35. SBI gets $625 mn from World Bank for solar power

  • State Bank of India (SBI) and the World Bank have inked agreements for a $625 million (around Rs 4,200 crore) facility to support grid-connected rooftop solar programme (GRPV) in the country
  • Through this initiative, at least 400 megawatt (Mw)  solar capacity will be created across the country
  • This will help SBI in financing GRPV projects at competitive rates and  will also catalyse the market and support the government to faster achieve its target to generate 40 gigawatt (Gw) of electricity from the widespread installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels

36. Linda Burney becomes first Indigenous woman elected to Australia’s lower house

  • Linda Burney, a former teacher has become the first Indigenous woman elected to the House of Representatives (lower house) of the Parliament of Australia
  • She achieved the feat after claiming victory in the marginal seat of Barton
  • She has won the seat as a candidate of the centre-left Labour Party in the national polls With this, she joins first Aboriginal MP Ken Wyatt of the conservative Liberal Party who was elected in 2010

37. NASA’s Juno successfully enters Jupiter’s orbit

  • NASA’s $1.1 billion Juno spacecraft has successfully entered the orbit of Jupiter, the largest planet of the solar system
  • It was launched five years ago, and will study Jupiter’s composition, gravity, magnetic field and search clues about the planet’s formation
  • Juno will be the second spacecraft to orbit Jupiter, following the Galileo probe which orbited from 1995–2003

39. Aditya Birla Fashion acquires global clothing brand Forever 21

  • Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) has stated that it will acquire global clothing brand ’Forever 21’ in the Indian market for USD 26 million (around Rs. 175.52 Crore)
  • Forever 21 has a network of more than 700 stores worldwide. Its India operations reported a turnover of 262 crore rupees in 2015-16
  • Aditya Birla Fashion executed a business transfer agreement with Diana Retail, Franchise of Forever 21, and DLF Brands for an acquisition of the business undertaking of Diana Retail under the Forever 21 brand
  • With this, Forever 21 business will form part of ABFRL’s Madura Fashion & Lifestyle division

40. Centre appoints Thiruppathi as new AG of TN

  • The Centre has announced the appointment of R Thiruppathi Venkatasamy as Accountant General, economic and revenue sector audit, of Tamil Nadu with immediate effect
  • Prior to this, he was serving as the Senior Deputy Accountant General in Agartala, Tripura, an official statement said
  • A 2000 batch officer of Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Venkatasamy is an alumni of University of Minnesota (US) and hails from Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu

41. China inducts largest homegrown Y-20 military transport plane

  • China has inducted its largest indigenously-built transport aircraft, which is named as Y-20
  • Y-20 is a breakthrough in military aviation technology for the PLA that allows the world’s largest force to transport cargo and troops over long distances in diverse weather conditions
  • The Y-20 entering into service marks a crucial step for the Air Force improving its strategic power projection capability
  • It is also regarded as a major breakthrough in military aviation technology for the PLA which is more reliant on Russian-made planes so far

  1. India has recently set up apparel training centre in Nigeria to promote skill development
  • India has recently set up an apparel training centre at Kadunia in Nigeria to support textiles industry and to promote skill development in the West African country
  • This is a first of its kind centre in Nigeria, set up in partnership with the Government of Nigeria
  • The centre has been established under the Cotton Technical Assistance Programme (Cotton TAP) for Africa
  • The programme is being implemented by the Department of Commerce, Government of India under 2nd India Africa Forum Summit

2. The 2016 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit has started in Warsaw

  • The 2016 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has started at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland from July 8
  • In the 2-day summit, the leaders of the 28 NATO Allies and many partner nations will deliberate and take decisions to increase the alliance’s security by strengthening its deterrence and defense and projecting stability beyond its borders
  • The issues such as continuing support for Afghan forces, defeating Islamic State militants on NATO’s southern flank and deterring Russian aggression on the alliance’s eastern flank will be discussed

3. The National Green Highways Mission (NGHM) has been launched from New Delhi

  • The National Green Highways Mission (NGHM) has been launched by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, in New Delhi
  • Under this initiative, plantation drive on 1500 km of National Highways was launched at a cost of about Rs. 300 crore
  • The mission aims to provide a green canopy along 100,000km of highways and create jobs for 1 million youth

  • The 2nd anti-drug Working Group meeting of Heads of Drug Control Agencies of BRICS countries has inaugurated by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to discuss issues related to narco-terrorism and money laundering among the BRICS nations (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) on July 8, 2016
  • The one-day meeting was organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India

  • The Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has recently launched Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) web portal in New Delhi to monitor nearly 645 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), known as farm science centres, in the country
  • The KVK portal will provide information related to all schemes, market development and weather updates, besides advisory to farmers
  • The portal “http://kvk.icar.gov.in” will also provide agriculture related information of the districts to the farmers

8. India’s first Centre of Excellence on Internet of Things (CoE– IoT) has been launched in Bengaluru

  • India’s first Centre of Excellence on Internet of Things (CoE– IoT) has been launched in Bengaluru, Karnataka
  • The centre, which can house 40 startups, is jointly set up by software industry grouping National Association of Software and Service Company (NASSCOM), Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) and Education and Research Network (ERNET)
  • The IoT centre, which allows startups to build a prototype and test them, will focus on building solutions for applications such as agriculture, automobile, telecom, healthcare and consumer goods

9. The world’s first digital incubator for student start-ups “SV.CO” will be launched in Kerala

  • The world’s first digital incubator for student start-ups “SV.CO” will be launched at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on July 13, 2016
  • With this, students can form teams and apply for admission to the digital incubator
  • Once selected, they will be guided right from selecting an idea to building a prototype and its launch to early customers within 6 months
  • Based on whether customers like the product, teams can then graduate to incubators, accelerators, raise Angel Funding, and even get acqui-hired as a team or hired to other start-ups or go for higher studies

  • As per the agreement, SIDBI will guarantee 75% of loans of up to Rs. 15 crore extended to the energy efficiency projects
  • SIDBI is the project execution agency whereas YES Bank is empanelled for the programme

  • The purpose of the agreement is to achieve synergy between DRDO and IITs for channelizing research efforts towards developing products and aerospace technologies
  • The CoPT will facilitate and undertake multidisciplinary directed research in the focused areas of futuristic aero engines, hypersonic propulsion for long duration flights, solid propellant combustion modelling and morphing aircraft technologies
  • It will also undertake advanced collaborative research in the areas of critical defence technologies

  • The IDFC bank Ltd has recently acquired 100% stake in Tamil Nadu-based Grama Vidiyal Microfinance, a leading Microfinance Institution (MFI) in India, to extend its rural banking services
  • After acquisition, Grama Vidiyal will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of IDFC Bank and will act as a dedicated Business Correspondent (BC) of the bank
  • The acquisition will help IDFC Bank to increase its network and reach to a large customer base in India
  • With this, IDFC Bank can access Grama Vidiyal network of 1.2 million households in 319 rural and semi-urban areas across 65 districts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Pondicherry, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh

32. The Zika health emergency has been declared in Peru

  • The Republic of Peru has recently declared a Zika health emergency across the northern half of the country after 102 people were infected with the virus
  • The 90-day health emergency was declared to prevent the spread of the disease, which is principally transmitted by daytime-active mosquitoes
  • Over 100 cases of Zika have been reported in Peru, more than 30 of the infected are pregnant women
  • The Zika virus has been linked to abnormally small heads and brain damage in newborns, known as microcephaly, in children born to infected mothers, as well as blindness, deafness, seizures and other congenital defects
  • In adults, the virus is linked to a form of temporary paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome

  • The deal is subjected to approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) also the proceeds from the divestment will be used to reduce debt
  • Lafarge India operates three cement plants and two grinding stations with a total capacity of around 11 million tonnes per annum
  • The company also markets aggregates and is one of India’s leading ready-mix concrete manufacturers. The proceeds from the divestment will be used to reduce debt further

  • Leading stock exchange BSE is introducing ‘Paperless SIP’ (systematic investment plans) that would allow mutual fund investors to make transactions through various modes of payments
  • The additional feature on BSE’s mutual fund platform – StAR MF  – would allow MF distributors to register SIPs for their clients, who can pay SIP amounts through various modes
  • The new facility, to be launched, is available only for non-dematerialised transactions and for installment of amount more than Rs 2 lakh
  • Under the Paperless SIP facility, the investors would receive an e-mail for all the payment modes, including direct pay, nodal account, one-time mandate and cheque, after the SIP has been registered

  • It would also help in land reclamation of 1,500 acres in the Ganga basin in Kanpur and development of cultural heritage
  • The MoU will be effective for 3 years

3.“Operation Megh Prahar”, the battle exercise conducted by Indian Army

  • The battle exercise “Operation Megh Prahar” has been conducted by Indian Army on the banks of the Yamuna River on July 14, 2016 to test the effectiveness of the ultra modern Tank T-90 & BMP-2 in fighting across opposed river obstacle in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh

  • The Nalanda site consists of the archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution dating from the 3rd century BC to the 13th century AD

16.Tri-NETRA launched by the Indian Railways to avoid train accidents

  • The Terrain Imaging for Diesel Drivers- Infrared Enhanced Optical and Radar Assisted (Tri-NETRA) system will be launched by the Indian Railways to avoid train accidents
  • The device uses infrared and radar technology to collect signals up to a distance of 2-3 km and displays the information on a screen fitted inside the locomotive
  • This will give ample time for the driver to apply the brakes
  • The tri-netra device will alert the drivers of any physical obstruction on railway tracks ahead and thus prevent train accidents
  • It will be very useful during fog, heavy rain and nights, when drivers have to constantly look outside the locomotive to judge the condition

17.“TalkToAK”, the live interactive programme has been launched by Delhi

  • Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has recently launched a live interactive programme “TalkToAK” at the Delhi Secretariat, which aims at direct communication with Delhi people

29.SIT on black money recommends ban on cash transactions above 3 lakh rupees

  • The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money has recommended ban on cash transactions of above 3 lakh rupees in a day and a separate law to declare such transactions as illegal and punishable
  • It has also suggested upper ceiling of cash holding at 15 lakh rupees to curb illegal wealth in the economy
  • The SIT felt that the cash transaction limit can only succeed if there is a limitation on cash holding
  • The panel said, in case any person or industry required holding more cash, it may obtain necessary permission from the Commissioner of Income Tax of the area
  • The SIT headed by retired Justice M B Shah, submitted its fifth report to the Supreme Court

30.RBI sets up an Inter-regulatory Working Group on Fin Tech and Digital Banking

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted an inter-regulatory Working Group (WG) to study the entire gamut of regulatory issues relating to Financial Technology and Digital Banking in India
  • The group has been set up in view of the growing significance of Fintech innovations, and their interactions with the financial sector as well as financial sector entities
  • It will review and appropriately reorient the regulatory framework, and respond to the dynamics of the rapidly evolving Fintech scenario
  • The Working Group will be headed by Sudarshan Sen, Executive Director of RBI, and has 12 members

31.India’s first e-court opened in Hyderabad

  • India’s first e-court has opened at High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad
  • It is the common high court for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
  • Inaugurating the e-court, Supreme Court judge Justice Madan B Lokur stated that Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were first two states in the country to be chosen for Integrated Criminal Justice System project
  • Justice Lokur, who heads the e-Committee of the Supreme Court, said modalities of the system will be worked out at a meeting scheduled on July 28

32.Terrapin acquires Yatra Online for $218 mn

  • The Indian travel agency Yatra Online which has been founded in 2006 and emerged as the fastest growing consumer travel platforms and online travel agents in India with more than 4 million customers has been entered into a merger agreement with a Nasdaq-listed special purpose acquisition firm Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corp (TRTL)
  • The transaction values Yatra at an enterprise value of $218 million (Rs 1,458 crore).
  • However, the combined company will continue to be led by Yatra’s experienced management team under the leadership of chief executive and co-founder Dhruv Shringi

33.Coimbatore-based Air Carnival commences operations

  • Low-cost airline with pink and white themed Air Carnival has launched its operations with its maiden flight from Coimbatore to Chennai
  • The airline, which is based in Coimbatore, will focus on short-haul services with ATR72-500 aircraft.
  • The carrier charged Re 1 for the first flight. It plans to keep the tariff at Rs 999 for the first three months. Initially, the company will focus on South Indian market for a year and then it plans to expand to other parts of the country.
  • The airline will have daily service for 10 sectors including 3 daily flights from Chennai to Coimbatore (up and down) and two daily flights from Chennai to Madurai (up and down)

  • NASA has announced the discovery of 104 new planets outside our solar system including four that could have Earth-like, rocky surfaces
  • Scientists discovered the exoplanets in Hawaii using Kepler space telescope
  • The unmanned Kepler mission has been scanning 150,000 stars in the Cygnus constellation for signs of orbiting bodies, particularly those that might be able to support life

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the SVEEP Portal in the Hindi language along with two other releases in the sidelines of the Conference of Chief Electoral Officers of States by the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi
  • The Series of Launches are : Launch of SVEEP Portal in Hindi, Launch of Matdaata Mahotsav Document and Film, and Release of NERP Handbook
  • However, SVEEP Portal is a web-based application, accessible to the Chief Electoral Officers and all other stakeholders and serves as a window for easy accessibility of various initiatives of the Commission

39.Seven Indian firms in Fortune 500 list

  • Seven Indian companies have made it to the latest Fortune 500 list of the world’s biggest corporations in terms of revenue
  • The list is topped by the retail giant Walmart with revenue of $482,130 million, followed by State Grid (revenue of $329,601 million) and China
  • National Petroleum ($299,271 million) at the second and third place respectively
  • While among Indian firms, Indian Oil Corporation ranked highest at 161st place with revenue of $54.7 billion. However, another state-run firm ONGC has moved out of the rankings for 2016 and private gems and jewelry major Rajesh Exports has made its debut at the 423rd position
  • Among the seven Indian companies, four are from the public sector while Reliance Industries (215th) is the top-ranked among private sector firms, followed by Tata Motors (226) and Rajesh Exports. Among state-run majors, Indian Oil is followed by banking behemoth SBI (232), Bharat Petroleum (358) and Hindustan Petroleum (367)

40.India and Bangladesh inaugurated Petrapole checkpost

  • India and Bangladesh has opened the newly constructed modern integrated check-post at Petrapole-Benapole point of the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. The cost of the project is 200 crore
  • Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have inaugurated it through video conference which have also been linked to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee
  • The multipurpose checkpost is aimed at further facilitating increased India-Bangladesh trade. Currently the Petrapole-Benapole lands customs station is one of the busiest handling over 60% of the India-Bangladesh bilateral trade of around US$ 6 billion

41.Turkey declares 3-month state of emergency

  • The decision was made following a meeting with cabinet ministers and top security advisers in Ankara

1.Delhi launched online payment system for licensing & registration of Food Business Operators (FBOs)

  • The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT) has recently launched an online payment system for licensing and registration of Food Business Operators (FBOs) Applicants can now make payments through credit and debit card and net banking, which will eliminate delay in collection of fees and simplify processes for applicants
  • Delhi Government also introduced a credit note system in dealings between the food safety officers and the FBOs, which used to be in cash
  • In the new practice no cash dealings will be done. Such measures will ensure transparency and also check corruption

2.India ranks 43rd in the 2016 Natixis Global Retirement Index

  • India has been ranked 43rd out of 43 countries in the 2016 Global Retirement Index (GRI) The list is topped by Norway, followed by Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden and Germany
  • The index is compiled by Natixis Global Asset Management with support from CoreData Research, a U.K.-based financial research firm

  • As per the conference, under the ‘Start-up India’ action plan, 3-year tax holiday and other benefits will be granted by the Union Government to the entrepreneurs

  • The Maharashtra government has recently launched a pilot project of e-complaint system on an experimental basis in Pune
  • Citizens can register a police complaint online at any city police station from anywhere
  • To register online complaint, a citizen will have to first create a user name and password on “www.mhpolice.maharashtra.gov.in
  • According to the police, people can write their complaints in up to 12,000 words and send it online. It will be analyzed by the police station concerned and if it is found to be cognizable in nature, the person will be called to the police station for registration of the FIR

11.India’s first green rail corridor has been launched in Tamilnadu

  • India’s first green rail corridor ” has recently launched by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu in Tamil Nadu to mark the first discharge free route in railways

  • The new boats which will be procured for this project will provide the same transportation experience as the Metro, and will be called ‘Water Metros’
  • The financing for this project is being done by the Indo-German Bilateral Cooperation, under the climate-friendly urban mobility plan
  • The project will implemented by the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and will become operational in 2 years

  • IMT is a payment system launched in India by Empays Payment Systems. It enables a payment to be made to a mobile phone from a bank account
  • There is no requirement for the beneficiary to have a bank account
  • The receiver can obtain the funds immediately from any IMT-enabled ATM

  • The Union Cabinet has recently approved the foreign shareholding limit from 5% to 15% in Indian Stock Exchanges for a stock exchange, depository, banking company, insurance company and commodity derivative exchange
  • Apart from this, the Cabinet has also approved the proposal to allow foreign portfolio investors to acquire shares through initial allotment, besides secondary market, in the stock exchanges
  • This move will help in increasing global competitiveness of Indian stock exchanges by accelerating/facilitating the adoption of latest technology and global best practices which will lead to overall growth and development of the Indian Capital Market

  • The satellite is the replacement for Insat-3D launched in 2013 on atop of Ariane 5 ECA

32.The Pashudhan Bima Yojana has been launched by Haryana

  • The Haryana Government has recently launched Pashudhan Bima Yojana in Jhajjar. It is an insurance cover scheme for cattle breeders in the state, which will be provided at a premium of Rs.100 for cows, buffaloes, bulls, camels and at Rs. 25 for sheep, goat and pig for a period of three years
  • As per the scheme, the insurance companies would give compensation in case of death of animal (cattle)
  • The scheme is free of cost for cattle breeders from the Scheduled Castes (SC)

33.India has recently set up military hotlines with China

  • India has recently set up military hotlines at 3-border locations with China at Border Personnel Meeting (BPM).The hotlines have recently been activated at the BPMs locations of Spangur, Nathu La and Kibithu
  • The in-principle approval has been given for establishment of a hotline between military headquarters of both sides
  • India has such arrangements with other neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, Myanmar and Nepal, as part of the Confidence Building Measures (CBMs)

37.A Film festival on Mother Teresa in India and abroad

  • The Mother Teresa International Film Festival (MTIFF), a film festival focusing on Mother Teresa’s life and teachings is going to be held at over 100 locations in India and around 50 other countries
  • The festival will be kicked off from Kolkata on August 26 after which it will travel all over the world for the next six months
  • It will be organized by the World Catholic Association for Communication
  • The objective is to spread the message of Mother Teresa before the world
  • The festival would also feature a film on the Nobel laureate and inspired by her life

38.Corporation Bank launches ‘Green PIN’ facility

  • Corporation Bank has launched a new facility called ‘Green PIN’.
  • This is an online module for generation of Personal Identification Number (PIN) for credit card holders
  • The facility enables credit card users to generate PIN online
  • PIN is compulsory for all point-of-sale (POS) terminal transactions at a merchant establishment
  • SK Roy, Chairman of LIC of India, launched the facility

39.HDFC ERGO enters into bancassurance tie-up with SVC Bank

  • HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company and Shamrao Vithal Co-operative (SVC) Bank have announced their bancassurance agency partnership to provide a range of non-life insurance offerings to the customers of the bank
  • The partnership combines HDFC ERGO’s experience in introducing innovative non-life insurance products with SVC Bank’s customer base across various States
  • New Delhi-headquartered SVC Bank has 194 branches in 10 States including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana

  • With his double century, Kohli entered the list of visiting captains with highest scores in West Indies
  • He is the fifth Indian captain to score a double century in a Test match after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (201 vs England), Sunil Gavaskar (205 vs West Indies), Sachin Tendulkar (217 vs New Zealand) and MS Dhoni (224 vs Australia)

42.RBI imposes a penalty of rs. 5 cr. on Bank of Baroda

  • The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of rs. 5 crore on Bank of Baroda in the alleged rs. 6,000 crore forex related irregularities that were observed in October last year
  • The RBI had carried out an investigation and noted weaknesses and failures in the bank’s internal control mechanisms including transaction monitoring, and assigning of Unique Customer Identification Code
  • As the bank has allegedly transferred in the garb of payments for imports that never took place, investigators suspect

43.Quikr acquires online recruitment startup Hiree

  • Online classifieds platform Quikr has acquired Bengaluru-based online recruitment firm Hiree for an undisclosed amount
  • Hiree will be merged with the startup’s jobs vertical QuikrJobs, and will work out of Quikr headquarters
  • Founded in 2014 by former Yahoo executives Manjunath Talwar and Abhijit Khasnis, Hiree is an online hiring platform focused on white collar jobs

44.Ericsson CEO Vestberg steps down

  • Swedish mobile telecoms maker Ericsson’s Chief Executive Officer Hans Vestberg has resigned from his post with immediate effect
  • Vestberg has been the company’s CEO since 2010
  • After Vestberg, Chief Financial Officer Jan Frykhammar will be the acting CEO, with group treasurer Carl Mellander as acting CFO

45.ITC appoints Sanjiv Puri as COO

  • Kolkata-based diversified conglomerate ITC Ltd has named Sanjiv Puri as Chief Operating Officer of the company.
  • He has become a successor to chairman YC Deveshwar, as Mr. Deveshwar is all set to step down from his post in February 2017. But he will continue as a non-executive chairman for three years.
  • Prior to this Mr. Puri was a whole-time director of the company

46.Flipkart’s Myntra acquires Jabong

  • Online fashion marketplace Myntra has announced that it has acquired its rival Jabong from Global Fashion Group to create India’s biggest fashion shopping destination
  • The acquisition of Jabong further strengthens Myntra and its parent company Flipkart’s position as the undisputed leader in fashion and lifestyle segment in India
  • Jabong is among India’s major fashion multi-brand e-store with more than 1,500 on-trend international high-street brands, sports labels, Indian ethnic and designer labels and over 150,000 styles from over a thousand sellers

47.Abdul Kalam’s statue unveiled in Rameswaram

  • Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Manohar Parrikar unveiled a life-size statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at Pei Karumbu, his burial site in Rameswaram to mark his first death anniversary
  • Kalam passed away on July 27 last year after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM- Shillong in Meghalaya
  • Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen “A. P. J.” Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007

48.RBI slaps penalty on UCO Bank, Allahabad Bank, Bank of India and canara bank

  • RBI has imposed penalty of Rs 2 crore each on Allahabad Bank and UCO Bank and Rs 1 crore on Bank of India for violation of anti-money laundering norms
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed an aggregate penalty of Rs. 2 crore on Canara Bank
  • On 25th July 2016, RBI had imposed penalties of Rs 5 crore and Rs 3 crore on PSU lenders Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank, respectively and also fined private sector HDFC Bank Rs 2 crore for lapses in adhering to anti-money laundering guidelines

  • The Council of Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR) has been ranked world’s 12th best government institution
  • The institutes were ranked by a prestigious Scimago Institutions Rankings that ranks institutes based on the research performance, innovation and social impact
  • France’s National Centre for Scientific Research was ranked first followed by Chinese Academy of Science, China

50.BCCI chief Anurag Thakur to join Territorial Army

  • BJP MP and Anurag Thakur will be commissioned into the Territorial Army (TA) as a regular officer on 29th July 2016
  • Thakur made it to the TA after clearing an exam and a personal interview conducted in Chandigarh
  • He will be the first serving BJP MP to join the military force

51.OKI installs more than 600 recycling ATMs for State Bank of India

  • Japanese payments company OKI has installed 600 automatic teller machines with cash recycling abilities for country’s largest lender State Bank of India across the country
  • The payments company OKI has manufacturing of ATM business in India which works with recyclable cash and has both cash acceptance mechanism along with cash dispensing in their teller machines
  • The Japanese company has tied up with SBI decided to procure OKI’s cash recycling ATMs in 2015 and deploy them in four of its designated regions across India

  • The first woman chief of aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) M Sathiyavathy was named as new Union Labour Secretary
  • The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved her appointment as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Labour and Employment with immediate effect, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT)
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is the Indian governmental regulatory body for civil aviation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation
  • This directorate investigates aviation accidents and incidents

53.Indian-American girl becomes the youngest delegate at DNC

  • An 18-year-old Indian-American girl has become the youngest delegate at the Democratic National Convention which has nominated Hillary Clinton as the party’s presidential candidate
  • Sruthi Palaniappan from Cedar Rapids and a student of Harvard University is a strong supporter of Clinton, the first woman to be nominated as a presidential candidate by a major political party
  • Sruthi Palaniappan is a student of the prestigious Harvard University and an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton, to make her as the first ever woman president of the United States

54.Skydiver Luke Aikins Sets Record For Highest Jump Without Parachute

  • Skydiver Luke Aikins, 42, became the first to jump from a height of 25,000 feet without a parachute, landing in a net in southern California
  • He has completed the jump in Simi Valley, west of Los Angeles
  • He had made his first tandem jump when he was 12

55.Bihar lifts ban on toddy (palm wine) sale and consumption

  • Bihar government has lifted the ban on the sale and consumption of toddy (palm wine) in the state
  • In April after Bihar imposed a total liquor ban in the state, it also banned the sale of ‘toddy’. But the decision to banned toddy was not lauded by Lalu Prasad and his party Rashtriya Janata Dal

56.Yahoo researchers built a powerful new online abuse detector

  • Yahoo researchers have developed a new online abuse detecting algorithm.
  • Most current abuse filters use a combination of blacklisted terms or expressions to catch hate speech online, but the new method applies machine learning as well
  • The system, with a reported 90% accuracy, can recognize an offensive string of words, even when individual words are inoffensive on their own
