Since its inception, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) has been an evolving exam making changes in its pattern according to the rising level of competition due to increasing number of applicants. Last year, GATE 2017 came up with some substantial changes which added significantly to the structure of the exam and brought up the level of competition requiring candidates to strive even more for the success. Due to such changes in the last edition, GATE 2018 has not made any more amendments this year. But the changes in the last edition are to be known by every aspirant who wishes to excel in the exam as it makes one aware of the issue at hand.
The following are the changes introduced in the last edition of exam which are even valid for GATE 2018 :-
- New Section in XE :-
The XE (Engineering Sciences) paper has got an additional section of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (H). Now there are total 8 sections in the paper (A-H).
- Examination date and sessions :-
The exam was conducted on 4 different dates, 2 slots a day, and all the dates were scheduled on weekend
- GATE International :-
GATE exam is being now held at international centres which include Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Singapore and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
- Application Process :-
a. There will be no restriction on the choice of city for second preference to be in the same zone as that of the first preference city. It can be anywhere in India.
b. During the application procedure, candidate’s thumb impression is mandatory to upload.
c. The candidates who have completed the qualifying degree need to upload the scanned image of degree completion certificate or final year/sem mark sheet. The candidates who are in the final year need to upload the scanned image of their pre-final year mark sheet, or provisional certificate letter as proof from his/her qualifying institute for eligibility criterion.
- Important points for GATE 2018 appearing candidates to keep in mind before they appear for the examination :-
a. Admissions to IITs/IISC or any other institutes shall be advertised separately by the institute and GATE 2018 won’t be shouldering the responsibility of admissions.
b. Candidate of foreign nationality (selected countries) who are willing to appear for GATE 2018 can opt for centres in any of the participating foreign countries and also in India. Examination fees for such candidates to appear in India will be Rs. 1500 and to appear in outside India centres, then the fees would be U.S.$ 100 in Dubai and Singapore and U.S.$ 50 for centres in remaining nationalities.
These are few changes which were made last year and also sustained by the GATE 2018 organisers for this year. Candidates from India appearing for GATE used to be about million and now that the exam has stretched its wings in foreign grounds, competition is expected to increase exponentially. So, we would suggest you to leave no stone unturned while your preparations and know that no preparation is enough to excel in such cut throat competition. Saying this, we wish you all the best and success in your endeavour.
