Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that tests the comprehensive understanding and practical knowledge of a candidate in various undergraduate subjects. The GATE 2020 exam will occur on a national level and covers many specialized domains including technology, engineering, architecture and other post-graduate subjects in science.
The GATE examination is conducted by some of the most renowned institutes of education in the country including Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology viz. IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati and IIT Kharagpur on behalf of The National Coordination Board (NCB), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
All you need to know about GATE 2020
GATE examination in the year 2020 has been organised by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi at various centres across the nation and outside the country. The aforementioned administering institute shall conduct the examination in morning and afternoon sessions on 1st, 2nd, 8th& 9th of February 2020 on 25 subjects (also referred to as “papers”). The examination would be purely a Computer-Based Test (CBT).

GATE has become the best platform for seeking admission or financial assistance in Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (M.Tech) or Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Science (M.Sc) in the institutions supported by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT), International Institute of Information and Technology (IIIT), private institutes such as Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Delhi Technical University (DTU), Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and other Government agencies.

Besides, direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central Government, i.e., Senior Field Officer (Tele), Senior Research Officer (Crypto) and Senior Research Officer (S&T) in Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India, has also found a way through GATE.
GATE Exam Eligibility Criteria
It requires every candidate to adhere to the eligibility criterion if he/she wishes to undertake the GATE 2020 examination. The criterion varies for every subject, a glimpse of which is mention below:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) and final year students.
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (5 years) and final year students.
- Bachelor’s degree holders of Four-year program in Science (B.S.)and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Master’s degree in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and final year students.
- Four-year Integrated Master’s degree (Post B. Sc.)in Engineering/Technology and second or higher year students.
- Five-year Integrated Master’s degree or Dual Degree in Engineering/Technology and fourth or higher year students.
- Five-year integrated M.Sc. or Five-year integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. degree and final year students.
- Candidates with qualifications got through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE/ MHRD as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech.

How to apply for GATE 2020 Exam
After ensuring eligibility, the respective candidate can apply for the GATE examination online through the official website- http://gate.iitd.ac.in/ ; following which he/she will have to register on GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) http://appsgate.iitd.ac.in by providing his/her personal details and specifying any of his/her Identity Documents (IDs) during the online application process. The candidate must also ensure to upload all the supporting documents i.e. eligibility documents, Category Certificate (if any) and PwD certificate (if any).

On successful registration, the candidate is required to pay an examination fee via net-banking or debit/credit card or UPI modes of payment accordingly as provided:

GATE 2020 Examination Centres
The GATE examination centres are spread in different cities across India, as well as, in six cities outside India which include Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Dubai (UAE), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore. GATE 2020 Exam Admit card details
The candidate can download his/her Admit Card for GATE 2020 from GOAPS website which will be available from 3rd January 2020 and is required to bring a print-out of the downloaded Admit Card to the Examination for verification along with the original and valid photo Identity Document.
GATE 2020 Exam Pattern
All the papers of the GATE 2020 examination will be held for a duration of 3 hours comprising a total number of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions (15 marks) will be on General Aptitude including 5 questions carrying a 1-mark each and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each. The remaining paper shall contain 25 questions carrying 1 mark each and 30 questions carrying 2 marks each on the respective discipline, comprising Numerical Answer Type (NAT) for which numerical answer must be keyed in by the candidate using a virtual keypad and Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ). Every wrong MCQ answer shall cause a negative marking of 1/3rd of the total marks carried by the question, however there is no negative marking for wrong answers in the NAT questions. Besides, the candidates are to use only an on-screen virtual calculator provided for the examination.
GATE 2020 Exam Result Date
GATE 2020 results will be announced on 16th March 2020 and shall be available on the GOAPS website along with the respective discipline wise cut-offs (minimum marks which a candidate needs to secure to qualify the exam). The cut-off varies from subject to subject and category to category. After GATE 2020 examination, candidates’ responses will be available which can be downloaded from the GOAPS portal along with the answer keys for various GATE 2020 papers displayed on GATE 2020 website. GATE 2020 scorecard will be made available for qualified candidates and the GATE score would reflect the relative performance level of the candidate in a particular subject, which is quantified based on the several years of examination data. The GATE 2020 score shall have a validity of three years from an announcement of the results.
