Indian Institute of Technology (formerly Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad is an Institute of national importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. Although the institute became an IIT on 25 May 2016 , It has a long and rich history of imparting technical institution. ISM was inaugurated on 9 December 1926 , located in mineral rich Dhanbad region , it has reputation of being the country’s most sought after institutes for mining engineering.
IIT ISM Dhanbad now has 18 departments that range from Applied sciences, Management and Engineering. The institute accepts applications for its M.Tech programme through GATE exam. After the GATE results a IIT (ISM) Dhanbad gate cutoff is released by the institute and the candidates with an equal or above Gate score can apply through common counselling or via forms on the institute website.

Apart from satisfying the a IIT (ISM) Dhanbad gate cutoff, candidates also need to satisfy some basic eligibility criteria which is as follows:
- Candidates should have a valid GATE score in the respective paper of their undergraduate field. The Gate score is valid for 3 years and should be valid at the time of application.
- They must have passed B.E/ B.Tech with a minimum of 55% marks from a recognized university. Reserved category is relaxed by 5% of marks in aggregate.
- The candidate is eligible if he/she is below 30 years of age at the time of applying.This criteria is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ ST/ OBC category applicants.
