GATE Exam Procedure – GATE exam is a national level test conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE committee. The GATE exam score is used for admissions to Post-Graduate Programmes (ME, M. Tech, MS, and Direct Ph.D.) in premiere institutions with financial assistance. However, GATE exam scores are also used for recruiting candidates to Indian public sector undertakings in entry-level positions.
Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2020 Exam
Bachelor’s degree holders in Professional courses or Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science and those who are in the final year of such programs can apply for the GATE exam. The exam is currently conducted in 23 disciplines. A candidate can select any of these based on their requirements, while engineering mathematics and chemistry are compulsory papers.
GATE Exam Duration and GATE Exam pattern
The GATE exam is of 3 hours duration and contains 65 questions with 10 general aptitude questions worth a maximum of 100 marks, carried out in an online Computer-Based Test mode. The questions comprise both multiple-choice questions and numerical answer type questions. At the end of the given duration, the computer automatically closes the screen, preventing the candidate from further actions.
GATE 2020 Result Date will be declared on March 16, 2020.
GATE exam results are usually declared after one month of the examinations. The GATE score cards are issued only to qualified candidates. The results consist of the GATE exam score, the all-India rank, and the cutoff marks for various categories. From the date of the announcement of the results, the score is valid for 3 years. Only around 15% of all appearing candidates qualify the exam every year. It requires high percentiles to get admission in programs in IITs or IISCs or get shortlisted for job interviews in PSUs.
GATE Admission Procedure
The GATE exam score is essential for obtaining financial assistance from MHRD or other government agencies. Candidates can be admitted directly into a course either based on their GATE exam score only or along with their performance in admission test or interview conducted by the department to which they have applied. The admitting institutes can prescribe a minimum passing percentage of marks in the test/interview.
Admissions to Post Graduate (PG) programs
There is no separate counseling for PG like undergraduate admissions in India. Each institute publishes its M.Tech notification, after which candidates must apply individually to each institute. For admissions in most self-financing postgraduate programs, the GATE exam is specified as mandatory. Candidates who qualified the GATE exam are also eligible for the post of JRF in CSIR Laboratories and sponsored projects.
The rise in the number of engineering graduates in India who wish to get a government job made public sector units to decide that a GATE exam shall be the primary criteria for an initial short-listing. Post this change, there was a rapid increase in the number of applicants for the GATE exam.
