Be Familiar with GATE Syllabus
While this shouldn’t come as a surprise, it is absolutely necessary that you can have a thorough idea and knowledge of what the examination is going to ask you about. In any competitive exam, knowing the syllabus and understanding your strengths and weaknesses are the two most important preliminary steps that you need to follow in this case.
Since you’ll be planning strategically, you need to know beforehand exactly what you should be studying.
Plan Your GATE Preparation
Studying hard is one thing, but if you want to clear the GATE exam with as little effort and hard work, then you need to study smart. In a practical sense, that means that you have to make the most of every hour you spend studying. Therefore, to do this, make sure that you begin by listing the different concepts from each section and also the average amount of marks allotted to them. Following this, start by studying those parts or concepts which have the highest amount of marks allotted to them.
This way, you will be thorough or familiar with the most scoring topics and that will boost your overall confidence. When in doubt, follow this table given below to help you determine whether you should prepare a particular concept or not.
Your task is to know exactly what you’ll be doing when you sit for your GATE Preparation. Don’t sit and decide what to do once you start studying as that is a complete waste of your valuable time at this moment.
Study GATE Previous year Papers for GATE Preparation
The GATE examination is designed to make you think; after all, it is designed for engineers who build and create things. So, you need to be on the same page as the examiner whenever thinking or problem-solving are both concerned. To do this, you need to be familiar with the way the questions are asked in the examination, and there is no better way to do this other than this studying and practicing questions from the past years’ examination papers.
Try finding as many question papers that are relevant to your current syllabus as you can. Be it Mock ones, or actual papers of the past.
We’ve listed the GATE Exam site’s page for past papers with the answer keys. You can begin your work here, and then move on to finding more papers later.

Less is More
Too many students who are preparing for GATE for the first time end up spending a considerable amount of time collecting and gathering examination study material only to never use them all. This is a fatal mistake. You do NOT need a ton of study material to clear the GATE exam, nor is it advised that you go that route. When coming to competitive examinations, less is more.
You do not need a lot of study material if whatever you have at hand is enough to prepare you for answering the questions in the examination.
You can certainly join a coaching class where you will be required to attend the lectures in-person regularly but bear in mind that it includes a lot of hassles and you might find yourself missing lectures if you are a working professional with a hectic schedule.
Therefore, a viable option that you can choose to streamline your preparation for GATE is SuperProfs GATE Online Coaching. If you keep only the required material near you, you will have more time to master it, and we recommend from our past experience studying and teaching that in the case of GATE exam, less is more.
Limit Socializing for GATE Preparation
This might be the biggest challenge for a lot of students. Since this is the era of social media where new apps keep popping up in the app store every week, students might struggle to find some peace away from all those since their environment is very much made up of Snapchat, Tik Tok, Instagram, and other apps.
However, the GATE examination demands your undivided attention, and if you are serious about your efforts, you must limit the time you spend socializing. Friends and your beloved ones can wait for your GATE exam to complete (if you really matter to them), so make it clear to them that until you have cleared the GATE exam, you are not going to be spending much time on anything else.
You shall have plenty of time later for socializing, but the GATE exam only happens once a year and so, you must not waste the precious time that you get to prepare for it.
Alternatively, try to limit your “group study”, because more often than not, you will end up spending time chilling and relaxing with your friends instead of studying sincerely, and we all know that group studies are rarely likely to succeed unless all the participating members have the same level of determination or drive to clear the examination which in itself is a rare occurrence!
The choice of selecting the GATE exam subjects is yours. But the planning for GATE preparation is something you will need help with and should take the help of someone who has cleared the exam already.
It’s always about finding the right people rather than any person.
