How to fill Civil Services Exam – Detailed Application Form?

Civil Services Exam – Detailed Application Form: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts exams for selecting people for the civil services of the Government of India. The responsibility of civil services is to run the administration of the country. UPSC exam is a 3 step process –

  • Preliminary exam
  • Main exam

Civil Service Mains Examination (CSE) – Detailed Application Form (DAF)

Once a candidate clears his UPSC Prelims, he/she needs to apply for the Civil Service Mains Examination (CSE) separately by filling out a Detailed Application Form (DAF). The CSE DAF is available online at Before filling out the CSE DAF each candidate has to register himself on the UPSC website. To get oneself registered the candidate has to fill in his name (as it appears on his matriculation/ secondary examination certificate), his six-digit roll number, date of birth and e-mail address. The respective login and password details are sent to the email address entered during registration.

Doubts regarding CSE DAF

Many candidates have doubts about how to fill the CSE-DAF, and the process is quite simple. The candidates then have to go to and then login using the six-digit roll number and the password sent to their email-address after registration. Earlier the CSE DAF had to be filled and then a print-out of the same had to be sent to UPSC by Speed Post / Courier. But now it has to be filled online and there is no need to send the form by courier.

The online CSE- DAF has six modules in which the candidate has to fill in his information. These modules are namely – Personal Information, Educational Information, Parental Information, Employment Information, Uploading of Scanned documents and Final Submission. Candidates should save the data entered in each module before proceeding to the next. This is necessary because if there is system failure or any other error, then the information filled until then is not lost.

Some basic details like Name, Correspondence Address, Permanent Address, Gender and Email Address is auto-filled from the information filled by the candidate earlier in the online application form of Prelims. While filling out the information in the CSE-DAF, one has to be very careful and verify every detail before clicking the “submit” button.

There is no option to do any changes online once the Final Submission is done and the UPSC will not entertain any correspondence to make any changes to the CSE DAF after final submission.

Documents needed for CSE DAF


The list of documents that need to be scanned and uploaded online include proof of age, educational certificates, experience certificate, category certificate, age relaxation certificate and physical disability certificate, if applicable. Documents have to be scanned in 200 dps, black and white and uploaded in pdf format. All the documents have to be in a single pdf file and there should not be separate pdfs. The total size of the pdf file should not exceed 3 MB.

After final submission of the CSE-DAF, the candidates are advised to save a copy for their record and keep a print-out of the same for future reference. This will be handy if one gets selected for the next stage of the selection process.
