INTRODUCTION
IAS PREVIOUS YEARS QUESTION PAPERS. UPSC wants good administrators with certain skills and aptitude hence the syllabus is designed accordingly. Students need to work hard for nearly a year to crack the exam. It is utmost important to go through last few years question papers of UPSC prelims in order to get the fair idea of the questions asked which can provide proper direction to revise the subject. Going through the last few years papers will familiarize you with the kind of questions asked. UPSC never repeats the questions, so mugging of the answers is of no use.
IAS QUESTION PAPER
Prelim paper consist of Paper I which is of General Studies this has 100 questions with 200 marks with time duration of 2 hours. Paper II is of aptitude having 80 questions with 200 marks having time duration of 2 hours.
- F – Fundamental, conventional and conceptual questions which are available in commonly recommended books.
- FA – Fundamental Applied questions are analytical questions which require information and application of mind.
- CA – Current Affair questions can be answered completely using given source alone.
- CAA(current affairs applied) – Current Affairs (applied) questions need information from many sources, application of mind and overall understanding.
- FCA (fundamental and current affairs) – These are F or FA questions supplemented with current affairs which need background information
- U – Unconventional questions are questions distantly related to syllabus by UPSC and are not present in reference sources or prominent in news.
Looking at the past question papers it is seen that the Current affairs has become important subject as far as UPSC is concerned. Students must work specifically on Current affairs and be up to date about things happenings around and extract study material from new paper also.
ANALYSIS OF LAST THREE YEARS PAPERS – PRELIMS
UPSC 2017 – PRELIMS
UPSC renewed its focus on conceptual and applied questions. The paper portrayed change from previous year’s paper. In 2016 main focus was on Current Affairs now it shifted to subject oriented. Questions on economy were more factual and related to current affairs. Questions from Polity were direct questions and were comparatively easy.

UPSC 2016 – PRELIMS
In the year 2016 prelim question paper saw a different trend from last four years. The question paper was focused on Current Affairs having 55% to 60% of questions. The questions on Current Affairs were more factual than conceptual. Questions from Polity section moved towards concepts like governance and public administration.

In 2015 UPSC shifted its focus on Current Affairs and the questions were directly from schemes and new paper and inclined to factual side Polity sections questions were from governance and public administration. Economy sections questions were conceptual and analytical
