The Process of CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION: UPSC conducts CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION in three phases –

  • a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (general studies and aptitude test), and
  • a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type followed by a
  • personality test (interview).

Eligibility criteria for the UPSC Exam 2017:

Nationality

  • For the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Foreign Service and the Indian Police Service, a candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • For the Indian Revenue Service, a candidate must be one of the following:
    • A citizen of India
    • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam  with the intention of permanently settling in India
  • For other services, a candidate must be one of the following:
    • A citizen of India
    • A citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan
    • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

UPSC CIVIL SERVICES EXAM Education qualification

For appearing in the UPSC Exam 2017, a degree of graduation in any stream from any university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) is required. Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying exam and are awaiting results are also eligible to apply, provided they submit the certificate of qualification along with the mark sheet to the UPSC before the main exam.

A candidate applying for IFS exam must possess a bachelor’s degree in one of the following: animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics and zoology, or a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, forestry or engineering from a recognized university.

Age relaxation for the UPSC CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION:

  1. A candidate must have the age between 21 to 32 years on August 1 of 2016. Prescribed age. For OBC the upper age limit is 35, SC and ST the limit is 37 years. Physically Disabled (Blind, Deaf, Orthopedic) – 42 years

Appearing to attempt one of the papers in the preliminary examination is counted as an attempt but failing to attend is not counted as an attempt.

Can I use one e-mail address to fill multiple application forms?

NO, one e-mail address can be used to submit only one application form.

Why should I choose three examination cities?
A candidate will most likely be allotted a centre in the examination city of his/her first choice. Only in cases where there are too many candidates opting for a certain city as their first choice, the other two choices shall be relevant.A candidate is required to fill his/her choices of cities to appear for the UPSC Exam 2017, but should remember that because of operational constraints, the GATE committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one, and allot a city that may not be any of the choices of a candidate.For candidates from the six other countries, the Centers from that particular country shall be only one choice (by default) and these are: Abu Dhabi.Dubai (UAE), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore.

How to Apply online for the UPSC CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION:

The application procedure for UPSC civil services examination has been entirely made online at the preliminary level and UPSC e-admit cards are issued which candidates appearing for UPSC CIVIL SERVICES PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION should download from the UPSC official website.

UPSC FEE structure for the CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION:

  • Candidates applying offline (through common application form) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees one hundred only) through a single Central Recruitment Fee Stamp.
  • All Female Candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes are not required to pay any fee.
  • Physically handicapped persons are exempted from the payment of fee provided they are otherwise eligible for appointment to the Posts to be filled on the results of this examination on the basis of the standards of medical fitness for these Posts (including any concessions specifically extended to the physically handicapped). A physically handicapped candidate claiming age relaxation/fee concession will be required by the Commission to submit along with their detailed application form, a certified copy of the certificate from a Government Hospital/Medical Board in support of his claim for being physically handicapped.
  • Candidates applying on-line (excepting female/sc/st/physically handicapped candidates who are exempted from payment of fees) are required to pay a reduce fee of Rs. 50/- (Rupees fifty only) either by remitting the money in any branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI or by using visa/master credit/debit card.
